A Texas man was taken into custody following a routine traffic stop in Marion, Indiana, after the discovery of a significant amount of Kratom in his vehicle. Indiana State Police have confirmed that 35-year-old Reuben D. Powell of Channelview, Texas, is facing felony charges related to the possession and dealing of the controlled substance. FOX59 reported the arrest occurred on Saturday afternoon after a state trooper pulled over Powell's 2004 Chevrolet Impala and spotted signs of possible criminality.
After observing these signs, the trooper called for a K-9 unit, whose dog later alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle. Subsequent search yielded about 500 grams, or just over a pound, of Kratom, a herbal substance known for its opioid- and stimulant-like effects when consumed. The substance is banned in Indiana, listed as a controlled substance, according to a report by WANE.
Powell, who was driving through Marion, now faces one count of dealing in a controlled substance, a Level 2 felony, and a misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance. Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Steven Glass informed 21Alive News of the specifics surrounding the traffic stop and subsequent arrest. Following discovery, Powell was arrested and transported to the Grant County Jail. The seized Kratom was sent to an Indiana State Police Laboratory for further analysis to determine the exact substance and weight.
While some advocate for its use as a natural remedy for pain and anxiety, authorities in states like Indiana have deemed it a danger, aligning with federal agencies' cautionary stance. Powell's arrest and the charges he is currently facing highlight the precarious legality of Kratom and could potentially reignite conversations around its classification and use.
