The Utah Hockey Club rookies have officially skated onto the ice, marking the start of their training camp at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns. With the NHL season fast approaching, excitement bubbled up among team management, "It’s like Christmas," Utah HC general manager Bill Armstrong said, as obtained by ABC4. The rookies' arrival comes after what Armstrong recognizes as a significant behind-the-scenes effort to transition the Oval for camp, "They’ve done an incredible job behind the scenes in getting everybody here and getting it all setup.”
Comparisons between the NHL and NBA rookie experiences bubbled up, with a nuanced view of athlete development. "I think in basketball, there are a lot of the fans here and the great Jazz fans, you know, they're thinking those first-rounders are going to be inserted right away," Armstrong said, according to FOX13, "but sometimes it’s one or two or three years out depending on the position, and the size of the player." He continued pointing out that player readiness is variable, and the path to the NHL can take time, especially for "the longer lanky guys" that might take longer to develop.
Among the standouts at the rookie camp, eyes are particularly locked on one player with potential. Lamoureux, without any apparent doubts about his possibilities, expressed his determination, "It’s going to be a dream come true. I’ve wanted that [to play in the NHL] my whole life and now I’ve got the chance to make it happen so now it’s just going to be about how I play," he shared, as per KSL Sports. Meanwhile, not all news from the camp was a skate in the park, No. 6 Overall pick Tij Iginla was absent due to a lower body strain, listing him as day-to-day and casting doubt over his immediate participation in the camp activities.
While some rookies are already demonstrating their mettle, there is an air of caution regarding Iginla's status. The club isn't providing much detail, only noting that Iginla won’t likely take part in the next day's session either. This hiccup comes during critical early moments when impressionable rookies make their mark and begin to shape their professional journey. Whether Iginla's absence will impact his season prospects remains to be seen, but for now, fans and management alike are holding their breath, hopeful for a swift recovery.
