Tragedy struck the West Garfield Park neighborhood on Wednesday night when a 36-year-old man, identified as Edward Hemphil, was fatally shot, marking yet another episode of violence in a community all too familiar with such scenes. According to the Chicago Tribune, Chicago police found Hemphil lying on the ground with two gunshot wounds to his back in the 4000 block of West Carroll Avenue.
Upon their arrival officers discovered Hemphil critically injured and promptly transported him to Mount Sinai Hospital where, despite the urgent medical attention, he was pronounced dead a short time later, still without the comfort of justice as no suspects were in custody and his death left piercing questions unanswered, in the heart of a neighborhood that knows this sorrowful tune all too well. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that an autopsy was scheduled for the following Thursday.
"No one was in custody" and detectives are investigating the case, as per the Chicago Tribune.
