Chicago's bedraggled West Garfield Park is observing a bloom of hope, thanks to Southside Blooms. The non-profit is renowned for converting derelict spaces into flourishing flower farms, and their latest project is no outlier. Stationed at the corner of Pulaski and West End, a lot once vacant and overlooked is now on course to blossom with perennials and opportunities for local youth. "It's going to be amazing to see and to just have the beautification of this lot even though it's been empty for years just to see something that has life in the neighborhood," Aretha Berdell of the Garfield Park Community Council told ABC7 Chicago.

With this being their sixth urban garden, Southside Blooms is no neophyte to greening the concrete jungle. The newly initiated farm promises not merely a visual treat but a sustainable retreat, employing solar power and rainwater irrigation. "Everything that's planted was perennial so the beauty will perpetuate itself year after year," Farm Operations Manager Ruben Nicolaescu said to ABC7 Chicago. With their approach, even the engaged youth who have found solace and employment here see beyond the immediate fringes of compensation. Marquise Green, an employee, candidly confesses his deeper connection: "This is my getaway I do this for my peace of mind I'm excited to come to work."

Southside Blooms, first sprouting in Englewood in 2017, now tends a delicate ecosystem of employment and environment, tethering opportunity to flora. As the fledgling Garfield Park patch prepares for a transformation, flowers like chamomile and sunflowers will soon imbue the locality with more than hues and scents – they'll seed future growth for area teens. Dionta White, an employee whose job search once hit a criminal record barrier, found redemption in the petals and the people of Southside Blooms. "It's just like Southside blooms really changed me. Saved me," he reflected to ABC7 Chicago.

Organizers detail that the corner will be decked with more than plants and trees, envisioning a garden-lined walkway that'll redefine the area's ambiance. Local residents, invited to co-cultivate, can harvest the delight of fresh blooms and edible herbs. “We want to provide a space where, if you’re driving by, walking by, we want to provide points of conversation," Nicolaescu stated to Block Club Chicago. In the seasons to come, this expanse will not only spawn perennials but perchance, usher in perennial possibilities for West Garfield Park's youth and their community – a blossoming testament to the potency of seeds diligently sown.
