Christopher Cazares De la Rosa, a 16-year-old from West Jordan, has been charged as an adult with the murder of Kian Hamilton, also 16, a student at Jordan High School. The charges, announced on Wednesday, include a first-degree felony count of murder and two counts of obstructing justice, a second-degree felony, according to documents filed in 3rd District Court. These stem from an incident that took place on August 23 at the Mountain American Expo Center parking lot, as reported by KSL.
Described as a confrontation where two groups, bearing “beef” over an extended period, met to “settle things,” the tragic outcome echoes a history of ongoing tension between De la Rosa’s circle and Hamilton's friends. This was highlighted by a previous altercation that led up to the fatal encounter, as "members of De la Rosa's friend group jumped Kian previously," a friend of Kian's informed police, according to KUTV. A fight that was supposedly meant to be a one-on-one bout spiraled into multiple scuffles, ultimately leading to the stabbing.
Detectives involved in the case have obtained a cell phone video that appears to show De la Rosa pulling out a knife before lunging at Hamilton. After the fight, De la Rosa allegedly instructed onlookers to delete any video evidence, as per ABC4. The footage is now part of the investigative materials being used in court proceedings.
When taken into custody by police, De la Rosa, who was seemingly unaware at the time that Hamilton had succumbed to the injuries, expressed disbelief upon hearing of the victim's death. "He died" he exclaimed, seeking confirmation from a detective who had informed him of the gravity of the situation. This, within earshot of the officers present, concluded with De la Rosa lamenting the potential impact of the incident on his future, as detailed by ABC4.
