Violence erupted in West Oakland this past weekend, where one person was fatally shot near DeFremery Park. CBS News San Francisco reports that the incident took place yesterday evening, prompting a police investigation after ShotSpotter technology alerted them to gunfire in the area.

Upon arriving at the 1600 block of Adeline Street at about 7:30 p.m., the responding officers located an individual suffering from at least one gunshot wound. After being rushed to the hospital, the unidentified victim succumbed to their injuries. The Oakland Police Department’s homicide section has since taken charge of the investigation, reaching out to the public for any information related to the shooting. However, details regarding the identity of the victim or potential suspects have not been released as the investigation is still ongoing.

The shooting coincided with a community event, a reunion picnic hosted by the McClymonds Alumni Action Committee. Mayor Sheng Thao took to X to express her distress over the violence disrupting what was meant to be a peaceful gathering. "I am deeply saddened there was a shooting at the McClymonds Alumni Action Committee reunion picnic at DeFremery Park. We will not tolerate this type of violence, especially at a peaceful annual gathering," Mayor Sheng Thao stated.

Mayor Thao is assuring West Oakland residents that partnerships such as Ceasefire are actively engaged in preventing further violence. She extends her condolences to the deceased's family and the larger West Oakland and McClymonds community.
