A 22-year-old man is in critical condition following a Friday evening car collision in Salt Lake City’s Ballpark Neighborhood. The Salt Lake City Police Department’s (SLCPD) Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Team is actively investigating the incident, which involved a 62-year-old woman driver and a young pedestrian.
According to SLCPD, the crash was reported to SLC911 around 7:45 pm on October 25, near 1110 South State Street. The CAR Team, involving multiple jurisdictional law enforcement, is now working to piece together what occurred, specifically probing into whether the young man was within a crosswalk at the collision's time.
The victim received immediate medical assistance and was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries by the Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance. SLCPD has confirmed that the driver of the car stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
As the scene was processed by the CAR Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians, traffic was rerouted with southbound vehicles on State Street diverted to Main Street at Herbert Avenue. The detour was expected to remain "for several hours." The specialized training of the CAR Team includes, but is not limited, to collision examination and crash scene mapping, which will possibly help to swiftly determine the causative facets of this tragic event.
The preliminary details about the crash are subject to change as the investigation develops, SLCPD cautions. Two photos from the accident scene have been released and are available for media use with proper credit given to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
