A month after a woman was shot during a dispute over a debt in a Midvale apartment, Cole Douglas Munoz, 44, was arrested following a vehicle crash in Murray. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail early Friday for investigation of offenses stemming from the Oct. 6 shooting, according to KSL.com.
A police booking affidavit cited by KSL says Munoz was in the apartment on Oct. 6 when an argument over a debt broke out. He allegedly showed a handgun and shot the woman in the stomach, causing serious bodily injuries.
Weeks on the Run End With a Crash in Murray
The affidavit says Munoz had been avoiding law enforcement for weeks after the shooting. Late Thursday, officers found him riding as a passenger in a truck in Murray, according to the affidavit as described by KSL.
The truck drove off when officers tried to stop it. It crashed after officers followed, and Munoz was arrested afterward, the affidavit says. A loaded gun was found on the floor behind the vehicle’s rear passenger seat.
New Domestic Case Surfaces Alongside Booking
Munoz was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, discharge of a firearm, and being a prohibited person in possession of a weapon, according to the affidavit cited by KSL. The affidavit also says that within the 24 hours before his arrest, he was identified as a suspect in a separate aggravated assault domestic case being investigated by the Salt Lake City Police Department. That investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released.
Statewide injury data and the status of charges
The cited injury figures are statewide, not a Salt Lake County tally: a Utah Department of Health and Human Services’ Violence and Injury Prevention Program report counted 1,386 emergency department visits and 603 hospitalizations for nonfatal firearm-related injuries from 2017 to 2021. The program also reported that firearm-related assault, unintentional and overall injury counts reached five-year lows by the end of 2023. These figures provide statewide context, not case-specific information. Utah Courts’ rules say a prosecution may be commenced by filing an information. That procedural rule does not establish whether an information has been filed in Munoz’s case.
The available KSL.com report does not say whether formal charges have been filed in either case or provide an update on the Midvale victim’s condition.
