A tragic turn of events unfolded on Florida's Turnpike near Griffin Road in Davie, where a 94-year-old woman was killed in a multiple-vehicle collision. The casualty, a Louisiana native, was identified in a WSVN report as a passenger in a van that crashed into the rear of a semi-tractor trailer. The incident, which took place on a Tuesday, prompted the response of the Florida Highway Patrol and resulted in eight other injuries, including a two-year-old boy.
The victims, all of whom were traveling together from Louisiana, experienced varied degrees of injuries and were transported to local hospitals such as Broward Health Medical Center and Memorial Regional Hospital. As per the WSVN coverage, the truck driver involved survived the crash without reported injuries. The gravity of what had happened went beyond physical harm, as a family from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, lost their matriarch, Earnestine Morris, on her 94th birthday.
In a heart-wrenching detail relayed by NBC Miami, Thyra Johnson recounted her final conversation with her mother. "I said 'happy birthday, 94-years-old,' she said 'thank you darling,' I said 'I want you to know I love you,' she said 'I love you too,' " Johnson told NBC Miami. The family, now grieving, remembered Morris as a woman who loved God and instilled this love in her eight children, six of whom are still living.
As Johnson copes with her loss, she reflects on the strong values her mother passed down to them. "She taught and instilled in us to respect other people, that's the kind of woman my mother was,” Johnson said, according to NBC Miami. With her faith as her foundation through this trial, Johnson seeks to accept the course of events. "He came and He took the oldest one there. He could have took them all,” she added, reflecting on the fragile nature of life. The inquiry into the exact cause of the crash is ongoing, leaving unanswered questions in the wake of the tragedy.
