A two-story, wood-framed house in Algiers Point was ravaged by a fire last night, displacing four residents, but thankfully, it resulted in no injuries. According to WGNO, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was called to the scene on Vallette Street at approximately 9:06 p.m.
The fire, which was already engulfing the property when crews arrived, required the response of 18 fire trucks and 47 firefighters to be brought under control, as reported by FOX 8 Live. NOFD officials declared the fire under control around 10 p.m., with teams on the scene within six minutes of the initial call. The swift response mitigated widespread damage to surrounding properties.
The residence at 105 Vallette Street contained three separate apartments. As per the WWLTV report, the NOFD specified that upon arrival, "firefighters were confronted with a working fire" that had spread significantly through the first and second floors at the rear of the building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Furthermore, the incident led to the displacement of the building's residents; however, all occupants were accounted for, including two cats who were reported to have also survived the fire. The preservation of life amid such chaos speaks to the timely and dedicated efforts of the firefighters who worked to secure the perimeter and ensure residents' safety. The NOFD has yet to publicize details about potential causes or factors contributing to the spread of the fire.
