Residents of a South Portland neighborhood endured hours of uncertainty as a man barricaded himself inside their apartment building's basement, armed with a knife. Portland police officers initially responded to the disturbance on the 2400 block of Southwest 5th Avenue late Friday night after receiving reports of loud banging sounds, as per a Portland Police Bureau statement. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the suspect had made unlawful entry into the building.
The standoff with police ensued for hours, despite numerous attempts to coax the man out of the basement space shared by four apartments. Tactical teams, including Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), assembled at the site. In an effort to bring the situation to an end, officers at one point resorted to using OC spray and subsequently, irritant gas when the man remained defiant. As reported by the Portland Police Bureau, the escalated efforts ultimately led to the man's surrender early Saturday morning.
Throughout this encounter with the armed individual, authorities were forced to shut down several streets, including a stretch of Southwest Sheridan Street, from Southwest 4th Avenue up to Southwest Caruthers Street. Local residents faced significant disruptions, as evacuations were carried out to ensure public safety. Assistance was also requested from Portland Fire & Rescue, as officers observed signs of fire within the barricaded area.
Following the man's surrender and his subsequent medical evaluation, the police assured the community that the closed streets would be reopened as soon as the area was cleared of law enforcement equipment and vehicles. Life in this usually tranquil neighborhood is slowly returning to normal after the harrowing ordeal.
