In a coordinated emergency response this morning, a cargo vessel captain was airlifted to a hospital after suffering a significant fall on deck, two miles from the Port of Miami. WSVN reports that the captain was navigating a stairway when he slipped and fell between 12 and 15 feet. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue classified the situation, "as a hazardous situation involving a vehicle in distress.."
Despite the challenge, the Fireboat 73 team quickly arrived at the scene. They determined that transferring the injured captain over the ship's side was too risky, leading Air Rescue to conduct a hoist operation for his safe extraction from the Atlantic Power, a vessel based in New Orleans. According to NBC Miami, a helicopter was deployed, and the captain was hoisted and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed that the operations on deck were handled delicately to avoid further injury to the captain. As of the latest updates, details about his injuries and current condition have not been disclosed.
