Chandler residents can expect smoother travel on Chandler Heights Road, as the City Council has approved a major improvement project for the section between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive. The project has a construction contract of nearly $9.8 million awarded to Sunland Asphalt & Construction, LLC, and a separate agreement for project oversight and public communication worth just over $1 million awarded to Consultant Engineering, Inc.
The upgrade, as detailed on the city's website, includes dual lanes in both directions and improvements for safety and accessibility. The new design features bike lanes, ADA-compliant sidewalks, and updated traffic signals, along with necessary upgrades to storm drainage and utilities. Notably, there will be coordination with Salt River Project to move power lines underground, enhancing both aesthetics and reliability.
Anticipation for the project is growing, with a planned start in early January 2025. This timing is chosen to avoid overlap with the completion of the nearby Chandler Heights Road segment from McQueen to Gilbert roads, which will fully reopen before the new work begins, minimizing disruption for residents and commuters.
The section from Gilbert Road to Val Vista Drive is expected to be easier to work on due to existing private development improvements, making it less complex than the McQueen to Gilbert roads project.
