More than a year after a shooting on E. 119th St., Chicago police have arrested 21-year-old Rashawn Sanders on charges of attempted first-degree murder. The arrest, detailed in a Chicago Police Department release, came after the department identified Sanders as the suspect in the June 5, 2023 incident, which left a 29-year-old man severely injured.
Authorities took Sanders into custody on October 23, 2024, near the intersection of the 2600 block of S. California Blvd. The case, which has lingered unsolved for over a year, saw significant progress as detectives pieced together evidence linking Sanders to the crime scene where the shooting took place at approximately 7:06 p.m. last year.
The person who suffered from Sanders' alleged actions was rushed to the hospital on that June evening and has been in the process of recovery since then. The motivations behind the attack remain unclear, and the Chicago Police Department has not released any additional information about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Following his arrest, Sanders is scheduled for a detention hearing today at the courthouse located at 2600 S. California.
