As the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel passes, Chicago's Jewish and Muslim communities have seen a harrowing surge in hate crimes, forcing both to increase security and face a disconcerting reality within the places they call home. A damning statistic underscores the essence of their plight: over 10,000 antisemitic incidents occurred between October 7, 2023, and September 2024, marking a historic spike according to the Anti-Defamation League's (ADL) preliminary data, as reported by ABC 7 Chicago. This figure stands as the highest in 12 months tracked by the organization since 1979.
In the same vein, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Chicago, represented by Maggie Slavin, has faced a daunting increase in Islamophobic incidents since the conflict. "Hate crimes and hate incidents happened to Muslims for sure, but it wasn’t nearly as overwhelming as it is now," Slavin told the Chicago Sun-Times. These communities have been subject to threats, vandalism, and even fatal violence like the tragic stabbing of Wadee Al-Fayoumi, a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy, which authorities have called a hate crime.
Amid heightened tensions and with the Jewish High Holidays recently observed, police agencies have escalated patrols around Jewish and Muslim institutions. The ADL urged vigilance in a dire reminder that hate-fueled ideologies are not idle threats but prick-like thorns in the everyday lives of those targeted. "Jewish Americans haven't had a single moment of respite," said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt to CNN, as per ABC 7 Chicago.
College campuses have not been spared either, with incidents of antisemitism experiencing a 500% spike from the previous year—ADL recorded over 1,200 instances on campuses within the past year. The ADL also references over 3,000 incidents taking place amid anti-Israel rallies, where "explicit expressions of support for terrorist groups including Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine" were found, as stated in an ADL release obtained by ABC 7 Chicago.
