A young teen in Chicago is now tethered to the arduous struggle for life following a severe act of violence on the city's South Side. On Tuesday night, in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, a 14-year-old boy was found critically wounded, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on the 7800 block of South Marshfield Avenue.
Responding officers discovered the boy in a severe condition, leading to an urgent transport to Comer Children’s Hospital. As of now, the boy remains in critical condition. While evidence markers — at least 21 of them — dotted the scene, the authorities have yet to apprehend any suspects, according to information from CBS News Chicago.
The visual intersection of childhood and violence, a clear backpack tangled amongst shell casings, tells a tale too often recounted in urban landscapes. Street Pastor Donovan Price encapsulated the grim tableau and the broader societal failure it represents. "It's a terrible sight to see a child's backpack, clear backpack, and shell casing markers at the same place at the same time. But unfortunately, when a child who is on their way from school was shot today, a 14-year-old was shot multiple times and is now fighting for his life, we need to do better, Chicago," Price told CBS News Chicago.
The investigation into the shooting is being conducted by Calumet Area detectives.
