A Eugene woman has been taken into custody on multiple counts of animal neglect after authorities discovered a disturbing scene inside a vacated apartment. Alyse Ninnette Edmonson, 48, is facing 46 counts of Animal Neglect in the Second Degree for allegedly abandoning dozens of cats without care, as reported by the City of Eugene.
It was late afternoon on August 21, 2023, when Eugene Animal Services received a distressing call. They arrived at a desolate apartment at 4:25 p.m. to find a scene that was hard to fully comprehend. To begin a thorough investigation, they enlisted the assistance of both Greenhill Humane Society and Feline Good Animal Rescue to help secure and care for 46 malnourished felines discovered amidst squalid conditions—an apartment devoid of sustenance, littered with waste. According to the City of Eugene's official statement, the tenant had earlier returned her keys, leaving the animals in a state of abject neglect.
In the months that ensued, the case grew ever more severe, eventually drawing the interest of the State Animal Cruelty prosecutor. The careful documentation of the neglect and the photographic evidence from the scene painted a stark portrayal of the conditions these animals were left to endure.
On October 16, Alyse Edmonson was located and apprehended at another apartment on the 1600 block of Olive Street at approximately 3:08 p.m., as per the City of Eugene. She was promptly arrested and later booked into the Lane County Jail facing charges related to the egregious neglect of the numerous cats in her prior apartment.
