A single vehicle crash in Tippecanoe County led to a fatality. The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office reported that the crash happened early Wednesday morning, around 3:30 a.m., in the 5100 block of Jackson Highway in West Lafayette. At the scene, first responders found the driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, deceased. The identity of the driver had not been released at the time of the reports.
According to a news release from the Sheriff's Office obtained by FOX59, a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling westbound on Jackson Highway at a high rate of speed. The vehicle failed to navigate a curve, running off the road and striking two utility poles and a fence before coming to rest in a ditch. The violent impact is believed to have caused the fatal injuries sustained by the driver.
The incident necessitated the closure of the road for approximately five hours while the crash was investigated and utility poles were repaired. This disruption affected the early morning traffic flow in the area. WTHR noted that both the Wabash Township Fire Department and Tippecanoe County Coroner's Office responded to the crash, supporting the Sheriff's Office in their investigative duties.
WLFI shared a statement from Capt. Rob Hainje, who described the driver as a man in his 20s. Details about the individual's identity are still pending as investigators work to understand the incident. The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office will release information later in coordination with the coroner's office.
Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office, as the case is still under investigation.
