A motorcycle driver was fatally injured near Miami International Airport on Monday after colliding with a vehicle and being ejected onto railroad tracks below an overpass. According to CBS News, the crash happened on State Road 112 at Exit 2, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by Detective Angel Rodriguez.
The accident occurred around 6 p.m. when both the motorcycle and vehicle were traveling in the same direction before colliding. The driver was forced off the road and onto the service road and rail tracks below, according to a preliminary investigation by the Miami Herald. As a result, nearby roads and the Tri-Rail tracks were closed, and the Miami-Dade Police Department advised the public to avoid the affected area.
The driver involved in the collision stayed at the scene cooperating with the ongoing investigation, which has been taken over by the Miami-Dade Police Department's Traffic Homicide Unit. No names have been released as the investigation into the cause and details of the crash continues.
The crash led to the closure of Northwest 25th Street at Northwest 42nd Avenue, SR 112 at Exit 2, McLaughlin Drive, and North Service Road, affecting Tri-Rail service as well. This situation caused significant delays for commuters, and the Miami-Dade Police Department has not provided an estimate for when normal traffic and rail operations might resume.
