Following the catastrophic touch of Hurricane Beryl, a Baytown gas station finds itself in the grip of a lawsuit for alleged price gouging. As Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee leads the crusade to protect consumers, the Baytown station stares down a $50,000 penalty to atone for the charge of hiking prices amid the storm's chaos. This gas station, affiliated with Shell and operated by A2S PetroTech LLC, reportedly dared to pump the cost of premium fuel to $5.49 per gallon—a steep rise of 44% from the pre-storm price of $3.80, as per Houston Chronicle.
Scant days after Beryl's fury, Menefee's office, besieged by over 250 price-gouging complaints, set their legal sights on the offender. According to the Houston Chronicle, "Harris County won't tolerate businesses taking advantage of residents in times of crisis," Menefee stated.
The Bellaire Shell service point, ensnared in the legal net of the Harris County Attorney's Office (HCAO), allegedly inflated its regular unleaded gasoline prices by up to 41%, climbing from $3.03 to as much as $4.29 per gallon. The lawsuits target both stations' managerial companies, hitting A2S PetroTech LLC for the Baytown site and a collective of BTCM Aviation LLC, Real Estate Chapter Texas LLC, and Houston Ventures LLC for the Bellaire station, as reported by KHOU.
Acting as the guardian against exploitation, Menefee's message resounds with clarity—price gouging in times of disaster shall not stand in Harris County. "I will continue to protect Harris County consumers from those who would exploit a disaster for profit," Menefee told the KHOU. As the lawsuit against the Bellaire station hangs in the balance, the warning is sent far and wide: in the wake of a disaster, profiteering from despair will summon the hammer of the law.
