More than a year after a fatal shooting in Hayward, an arrest has finally been made in connection to the incident that cost Oscar Baires Martinez his life. On Tuesday, Hayward detectives apprehended 26-year-old Deronne Taylor, a resident of Hayward, linking him to the crime that occurred on October 2, 2023, at the intersection of B Street and Alice Street.

According to the official Hayward Police Department statement, the initial reports of the shooting were made in the early hours of the morning, leading to a swift law enforcement response. Unfortunately, despite being rushed to a nearby hospital by a friend, Martinez, 43, succumbed to his injuries. The events of that night also resulted in two more men, ages 44 and 32, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.

An extensive investigation following the shooting enabled detectives to connect the incident to Taylor, culminating in his arrest almost a year later. Taylor has since been booked at the Santa Rita County Jail on murder charges, marking a significant breakthrough in a case that had left the community seeking answers and justice for the victims.

In confirming Taylor's arrest, the department has also called on the public to participate, urging anyone with additional information to come forward. Detective Navas can be reached at 510-293-7176 if anyone has insights or knowledge about the homicide.
