The city of Indianapolis witnessed a gun violence yesterday evening, resulting in at least one confirmed fatality. A person was fatally shot in the 100 block of North Oxford Avenue on the east side of the city. According to a report by WISH-TV, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers were dispatched to the scene at around 10:24 p.m. following reports of a person shot in a residential area. They found a victim suffering gunshot wounds who was initially listed in critical condition before being pronounced dead.
The near east side shooting is sadly not an isolated incident; it marks the second fatal shooting to have occurred on the same night. About 3 miles northeast of North Oxford Street, another individual succumbed to gunshot injuries in an event located on North Drexel Avenue. WTHR reported that IMPD officers had responded to the vicinity of East Washington Street and North Rural Street near the Oxford Avenue shooting, to find a critically wounded victim—who would not survive the injuries.
Meanwhile, on Drexel Avenue, IMPD confirmed the death of an adult male victim found with injuries from gunshot wounds at approximately 9:36 p.m., reported FOX 59. A delivery driver, having just completed a delivery nearby, discovered the victim's body prior to the arrival of the authorities and claimed to have witnessed no antecedent actions leading up to the grim find. As IMPD officials investigate, they have acknowledged a private gathering was in close proximity to the Drexel shooting. However, attendees from the event did not report seeing the incident unfold.
Even as details around potential connections between the incidents remain sparse, law enforcement urges the community to forward any information to the IMPD Homicide Office or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana. Indianapolis' night of violence included not only the fatal incidents on Oxford and Drexel but also two other individuals walked into St. Francis and Community East Hospitals, respectively, with gunshot wounds. IMPD has indicated that these victims are in stable condition.
