Deputies in North Highlands are actively investigating a shooting that left a man hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening along the 4100 block of Gothberg Avenue, as reported by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. The 20-year-old victim was taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition, but authorities have since stated that he is now stable, ABC10 reports.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain to be clearly understood, but according to Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, the incident appears to have stemmed from a dispute between the victim and the alleged shooter, who were said to know each other. The altercation purportedly began when the suspect, a 17-year-old male, attempted to steal items from the residence and was subsequently forced out, only to quickly start shooting. It is uncertain whether the firearm used belonged to him or not, KCRA detailed.
Following the confrontation, the injured suspect managed to leave the scene and drive himself to a location on Holly Branch Drive in the Natomas area. From there, he was also taken to UC Davis hospital for treatment, with the extent of his injuries still unclear. Law enforcement is still piecing together the events and confirming the identities of those involved.
Officials are now working to confirm whether the suspect being treated at UC Davis is the same individual involved in the Gothberg Avenue shooting. "Right now, deputies aren't 100% certain that that suspect is related to this, the person at UC Davis, but we do have witnesses going down there right now to shore up some IDs and then figure it out from there," Sgt. Gandhi told KCRA. The investigation is ongoing.
