Earlier today, a fatal series of events unfolded near West Palm Beach. A collision at about 2 a.m. at Southern Boulevard and Benoist Farms Road involved a Chevy Silverado 3500HD, operated by Daniel Albarran Bonja, age 37, rear-ending a Cadillac XTS sedan driven by Jason Bartley, age 32. The impact was powerful enough to send the Cadillac crashing into a concrete wall; the ensuing rupture of the fuel tank resulted in a fire that tragically claimed Bartley's life, as reported by Matt Papaycik of WPTV.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Bonja displayed signs of impairment and preliminary blood results confirmed alcohol consumption. Bonja, who was traveling from Belle Glade to a local hotel, is now under arrest for DUI manslaughter and driving without a valid license and causing death. This crash, which closed a significant traffic artery near the Turnpike, also prompted the shutdown of eastbound lanes of Southern Boulevard near Benoist Farms Road, as detailed by CBS12 News. Responders were quick to arrive at the scene to assist and control the situation.
Further complications resulting from the crash included traffic disruptions that extended into the morning hours. A post on X from a CBS12 correspondent confirmed the closure of eastbound Southern Boulevard, causing delays for morning commuters as the crash scene was investigated and cleared.
Law enforcement officials and first responders carefully investigating the aftermath. Investigations continue as officials seek to piece together the events that led to this destruction, ensuring that those affected receive the necessary support and justice in the wake of this tragedy.
