In an unfortunate incident on the evening of Wednesday, a man was tragically killed when he was struck by a passing vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 15 in Davis County, as reported by FOX 13 Now. The Utah Highway Patrol shared that the man's pickup truck had suffered a breakdown in the HOV lane near mile 335 in Clearfield around 7:30 p.m., following which he was standing beside it when the fatal accident occurred.
The Utah Highway Patrol explained the victim's vehicle had not been illuminated, this likely compounded by the dusk hour, a car, in an attempt to evade the truck inadvertently caused another to swerve, resulting in the second vehicle colliding with the man who had exited his vehicle, as obtained by FOX 13 Now.
According to KSL, drivers did not see the man until it was too late to change their course without risking an accident. Sgt. Rick Shrader of the UHP stated, "Drivers did not see him until it was too late and swerved to avoid him, but one car struck the man on the shoulder of the freeway." The man's identity has not yet been released, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Consequently, the aftermath of the crash led to a complete closure of that segment of I-15 around 8 p.m., however, the Utah Department of Transportation did not provide an estimate on reopening time as they addressed the situation, as noted by KSLTV. The repercussions of such incidents underscore not only the fragility of life but also serve as a grim reminder of the critical nature of roadway safety and visibility, especially in emergencies.
