A 20-year-old Memphis resident, Dominic Watkins, has been charged with first-degree murder following a fatal shooting that happened last Sunday, according to multiple local news outlets. Action News 5 reports that the incident, which occurred just before 10:20 a.m. on Capen Avenue, concluded with the victim, now identified as Darrian Scott, aged 26, being pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers were called to the scene to detain Watkins and four witnesses. During their investigation, police discovered fifteen spent .40 caliber shell casings and a Glock 23 Gen 4 handgun with an extended magazine. WREG detailed that surveillance video from the area provided visual and audio evidence of the shooting as it transpired. Watkins allegedly opened fire on Scott after a heated argument escalated to the point where a Sonic drink cup was thrown at Watkins. Police say the argument continued, causing the witnesses to try, but failed to diffuse the rising tensions before Scott was mortally wounded.
No bond had been set following Watkins' arrest and booking into the Shelby County jail on the murder charge.
Further testimonies from the witnesses, according to police, helped identify Watkins as the alleged shooter in a six-person photo lineup, leading to his upcoming confrontation with the judicial system set for Tuesday morning.
