The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is currently on the lookout for a suspect connected to a simple assault case that allegedly carries undertones of hate or bias, on October 12, 2024. According to the MPD's appeal for assistance, the incident took place in Northwest Washington, DC. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reportedly attacked at around 9:44 a.m. while walking along the 800 block of 6th Street, Northwest. MPD points out that as the aggressor fled, they voiced remarks regarding the victim's ethnicity, adding a layer of potential bias to the act of violence.
The department has made a clear request to the public to avoid direct intervention, instead urging those with any pertinent information to step forward by reaching out through a phone call at (202) 727-9099, or anonymously texting a tip to 50411. To encourage community members to come forward, MPD has disclosed that they are offering a reward of up to $1,000 for tips that lead to an arrest and indictment in connection with the crime. The MPD investigates all such incidents with the possibility of hate or bias in mind, though they have stated that such a classification may shift as more information becomes available and the investigation proceeds.
It's crucial to recognize that the MPD's classification of an incident as a hate crime does not guarantee that it will be prosecuted as such. Such decisions ultimately rest with the prosecutors who, taking into account all evidence acquired throughout the investigation, may opt to press different or additional charges. The MPD has furthermore indicated that the Special Liaison Branch is involved in the investigation, reflecting the sensitive nature of the case and signifying a commitment to thoroughly addressing the hate or bias elements that may have been at play.
