Early yesterday morning in Oakland Park, a 31-year-old woman named Ruika Abdulrahman suffered a gunshot wound to her arm. The shooting occurred during an event deputies believe to be associated with a burglary. The Broward County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of the incident near the intersection of NE 13th Terrace and 49th Street around 5 a.m., where they found Abdulrahman injured and in need of medical attention.
Initial reports indicate that the deputies were able to quickly provide first aid to Abdulrahman before paramedics with Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported her to a hospital, where her injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening. As the investigation unfolded, a white SUV was discovered at the scene with its driver's side window shattered by gunfire. This was confirmed by WSVN, which also reported crime scene investigators collecting evidence and documenting the vehicle and surrounding area.
According to a local resident, Rocko Kryns, the quiet neighborhood was startled by the sound of the gunshot. "At about 4 a.m., 4:30 , somewhere around that time, I heard like a single gunshot, and I knew it was a gunshot," Kryns told WSVN. "It was very, very loud, different than anoy other sound. I was just sitting there, wondering what’s going on, and in the next, like, five minutes later, I just heard police cars."
The homeowner, seemingly unaccustomed to such events, was seen speaking with detectives earlier in the day, as noted by neighbors and mentioned in accounts by both CBS News Miami and WSVN. "I've been here over 20 years and never seen anything like it," Kryns said, echoing a sentiment of community tranquility disrupted.
As for Abdulrahman, she was taken into custody following the incident, though specific charges have not been disclosed. The Broward County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the precise circumstances that led to the shooting, yet to reveal if Abdulrahman was indeed attempting to burglarize the SUV in question.
