In a move that melds education with real-world application, the Hillsboro School District has successfully showcased the fruits of its labor through Oregon's first registered youth apprenticeship program in advanced manufacturing. Launched back in August 2022, the program recently celebrated its inaugural success with five students, including Yuvindu Chandrasinghe, crossing the finish line in June 2024. These young apprentices have been to earn while they learn, gaining invaluable hands-on experience and a paycheck to boot.
Century High School's very own Yuvindu Chandrasinghe got wind of this opportunity during a school session where local businesses, including Tosoh Quartz, pitched the program. Tosoh Quartz, a company involved in making intricate parts for chip wafers, became Yuvindu's apprenticeship ground. He reported, "I work in the area that uses Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to cut out pieces of quartz glassware that will eventually be used in the processing of integrated circuits." As per a statement detailed by the City of Hillsboro's official website, Yuvindu's day begins with a briefing from his mentor, followed by the intricate task of reconditioning machines, measuring, and more.
According to the city's press release, Yuvindu is confident that the program will effectively pave the way for a career path. He articulated, "I’m really getting a head start by being involved in this—at the end of the program, I'll have two years of experience," hinting at the competitive edge this program provides. For those mulling over whether to join the apprenticeship, Yuvindu's advice is uncomplicated: "I would definitely encourage them to do it, especially if they don’t have a job yet." Emphasizing the training's simplicity and value, he encouraged others to take the leap and apply.
This initiative benefits both students and businesses. Students gain skills and confidence, while businesses get access to eager, trained workers ready to join the tech industry.
