The Bay Area is under a critical fire weather watch as the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Francisco has issued multiple warnings and advisories including a Red Flag Warning and Wind Advisory across several regions. Beginning Thursday night through Saturday, residents should brace for offshore winds reaching 25-35 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, and conditions worsening in higher terrains where isolated gusts may hit 65 mph.
NWS San Francisco advises that the combination of low humidity levels, as low as 10%, alongside the strong winds, will significantly increase the threat of wildfires. Affected areas include the North Bay Interior Mountains, Interior East Bay, and Eastern Santa Clara Hills. With the winds originating from the north, firefighting efforts could be compromised by rapid drying and unexpected wind shifts.
Aside from fire concerns, a Beach Hazards Statement is also in effect until 9 PM Wednesday. The statement warns beachgoers of moderate risk for sneaker waves with northwest swell causing breaking waves between 6-8 feet. "Never turn your back on the ocean," the NWS reminds, underscoring the unseen power that the calm waters on the surface carry with it, capable of pulling the unsuspecting into its depths.
While today's weather remains relatively quiet, the looming threat of an "inside slider" will transform this tranquility into high alert from Thursday to Saturday. According to a detailed forecast discussion by NWS San Francisco, the strongest winds are expected as a deep upper-level low drops into the Great Basin. It goes on to note, "This will bring the strongest winds of the event." The marine layer is set to retract under the reinforcing northerly winds, offering no relief to the heightened fire risk.
Mariners aren't left out of nature's stern memo, with a Small Craft Advisory in effect due to the anticipated wind escalation. Anticipated to morph from "a moderate breeze to near gale force over the next 48 hours," these winds pose a serious challenge on the waters. Gale warnings suggest the likelihood that the waters will become a tempest for vessels not built to withstand such relentless gusts.
As we shift into Thursday, communities throughout the Bay Area are urged to prepare, with NWS's fire weather alert recommending securing outdoor items before winds intensify. The Red Flag Warning will last from 11 PM Thursday until 5 PM Saturday, potentially straining our region's firefighting resources and resilience.
