Planned Parenthood is set to close two of its clinics in the St. Louis area, but asserts that this move is part of an effort to extend and enhance their services, despite tightening legislative pressures. The North County Health Center in Florissant and the South Grand Health Center close to downtown St. Louis are both scheduled for closure on November 1. KSDK reported that there will also be a subsequent closure of the Joplin clinic on January 1. The consolidation, according to Planned Parenthood officials, intends to improve the remaining services, particularly by expanding telehealth options.
Richard Muniz, interim President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Great Rivers, highlighted the organization's commitment to adapting to patient needs through service changes, "The operational changes we’re announcing will ensure that we’re here for our patients not just today, tomorrow, but for the next 90 years," he was quoted saying in a statement obtained by KSDK. Muniz underlined that despite the "repeated attacks from politicians," their mission remains unwavering. As for the staff impacted by the restructuring, no layoffs are on the horizon – all health center staff are being offered the opportunity to remain within the organization.
The move comes amid stricter state regulations, as Missouri has enacted legislation that removes Planned Parenthood clinics from the Medicaid funding program. However, leadership affirms that the closures are unrelated to the new law. Further emphasizing the resilience of the organization, Muniz's statement published on First Alert 4 highlighted the organization’s dedication to adapting its services to create "a better patient experience."
For patients in areas where clinics are closing, such as Joplin, Planned Parenthood is committed to providing transportation to other facilities when necessary. According to a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood Great Rivers, these changes are driven by patient data and demand, "One of the most surprising things that we learned through this process was that most patients see us at multiple health centers," Colleen McNicholas, chief medical officer, told FOX2Now. The Central West End location is poised to gain an additional provider, and the St. Peters clinic will increase its operating days to include Saturdays.
