A tragic car accident in Pompano Beach on October 4 led to the death of a young woman. The crash happened around 8:15 p.m. when a 2008 Ford Mustang, driven by 23-year-old Jose Garcia Peleaz, collided with a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Chris Cherenfant. Margarita Ortuno Cruz, 21, a passenger in the Mustang, was ejected from the vehicle and later pronounced dead at Broward Health North.

According to The Miami Herald, Garcia Peleaz was heading eastbound on West Atlantic Boulevard as Cherenfant was attempting to turn left onto Walmart Drive from the westbound direction. In a press release, BSO did not clarify the speed at which the Mustang was traveling, but the force of the impact was enough to roll the car after the T-bone collision, leading to Cruz's fatal ejection. A memorial established for Cruz notes her as a "bright light in the lives of everyone she met."

Both drivers and another passenger from the Mustang were also transported to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. While the Broward Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation, it remains unclear if there will be any charges or citations issued to the drivers involved. The report from Boca Post confirms that the Traffic Homicide Unit is currently handling the case at hand.

The community and friends of Cruz are expressing their grief through a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses. Laura Ortuno described her as a caring friend and family member who brought joy to those around her. The investigation is ongoing, and more details about the incident are anticipated.
