In response to a surging number of car burglaries near haunted house attractions in Salt Lake City, the local police department has issued a warning and safety recommendations to the public. Despite a 25% drop in vehicle burglaries citywide, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is honing in on a troubling uptick of these incidents specifically around the area of 800 South 600 West, a frequent haunt for thrill-seekers this spooky season.
From the beginning of September this year, the SLCPD has recorded 20 car burglaries in that location, a stark increase from just four during the same timeframe in 2023, according to the SLCPD. These crimes are typically crimes of opportunity that, occur when unsuspecting victims leave valuables in sight or fail to secure their vehicles.
They are urging the community to adopt more vigilant parking habits, suggesting areas that are well-lit and reminding individuals to keep their valuables, including firearms, out of their unattended cars. In an outreach initiative, SLCPD’s recommendations extend to locking doors and tucking away any items that may attract a thief’s gaze. "If you see something that appears suspicious, call 9-1-1 or our non-emergency number 801-799-3000," the SLCPD advises.
As part of their strategy to combat this recent spike in car burglaries, the SLCPD’s Liberty Patrol Division is synergizing their resources with the aid of detectives, and the SLCPD’s Crime Intelligence and Analysis Unit. Efforts also include reaching out to business owners and visitors in the impacted neighborhoods to raise awareness. An informative public service announcement is in circulation to help educate the public on the importance of taking these precautionary measures.
