The Salt Lake City Police Department has wrapped up a targeted enforcement operation along the Jordan River Trail, netting 102 arrests over 30 days, the force announced today. The initiative, which spanned from September 14th through October 14th, was launched in response to local concerns over increasing person, property, and drug-related crimes in the area.

Chief Mike Brown praised the operation's impact, emphasizing the vital role of his officers in engaging the community and reducing crime. "We are committed to disrupting criminal activity to protect our trails, open spaces and neighborhoods," Brown said, as per SLCPD. The breakdown of police action includes 48 felony arrests, 54 misdemeanor arrests, 183 traffic stops, and the issuance of 64 citations. Officers also engaged with over a thousand individuals to offer outreach or advance investigations.

Along with arresting individuals linked to drugs such as fentanyl, methamphetamine, and heroin, the operation saw the confiscation of related paraphernalia and dangerous weapons. The SLCPD's efforts were comprehensive, combining increased patrols and investigative work with community outreach, particularly to business owners in the vicinity of North Temple Street and the trail itself.

Furthermore, Chief Brown highlighted the expanded measures implemented alongside traditional policing, including strategies focused on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). The department's Pioneer Patrol Division has leveraged CPTED's principles, such as improved lighting and the removal of vegetation and objects that obstruct sightlines, to create safer environments and mitigate the opportunity for crimes to occur.

Multiple SLCPD assets participated in the operation, including various bike and motor squads, an intelligence center, K9 squads, and the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team. This boost in enforcement follows similar efforts initiated in October 2023 to address criminal activities rooted along the Jordan River Trail. The police department has continued its practice of daily patrols in the area to maintain this disruption of crime.

Concluding the announcement, the SLCPD extended its gratitude to the Utah Department of Public Safety for their support during this operation. The department also reiterated the importance of community vigilance and provided reminders on how the public can report crimes or related concerns. For specific information regarding the individuals arrested during the operation, including charges and age, the public is referred to the Utah Courts Xchange system.
