An 18-year-old man has been taken into custody by the Salt Lake City Police Department on accusations of illegal street racing, a practice that has been causing concern in the area due to its potential for danger and disruption. In a public announcement, Chief Mike Brown condemned the activity, highlighting the severe risks involved noting, as per SLCPD, "Illegal street racing is incredibly dangerous, not just for those racing, but for everyone around," and warning of the legal repercussions that could include significant fines, license revocation, and jail time.
According to SLCPD, the incident that led to the arrest happened near the intersection of 400 South and 5200 West around 11:30 p.m. on Friday. Reports from SLCPD state that officers were prompted to respond after receiving information about a large congregation of racers obstructing business parking lots. During their investigation, they witnessed two cars, one in the correct lane and the other in the wrong one, about to seriously speed past them before being intercepted by the police and a Utah Highway Patrol trooper.
The 18-year-old driver's car was impounded as the authorities continued their investigation into the matter. Street racing, a problem exacerbated by the city's open roads and urban growth, has not only become a spectacle drawing huge crowds but has also negatively impacted local businesses and safety, with incidents rising over 54% in September 2024 compared to the previous year.
To combat these events, SLCPD has implemented several measures, including the strategic use of steel construction plates to disrupt the races. However, this requires significant resources, straining the department's ability to simultaneously address other crimes.
