The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) recently issued a warning about a scam involving an artificially generated video that recreates the voice of SLCPD Chief Mike Brown. As reported by SLCPD, an email bearing the false semblance of legitimacy was sent from a fraudulent account to a Woods Cross community member. The deceptive message, articulated with Chief Brown's cloned voice, claimed the victim owed a substantial sum to the federal government.
The video used in the scam employed footage from an old interview with Chief Brown, which was then manipulated to address the recipient directly. The seamless synthesis of sight and sound presented an authoritative, yet entirely fictive message; instructing the recipient about a failed wire transfer and a nearly $100,000 debt owed. The authenticity of the communication was undermined by subtleties, unnatural speech patterns, odd emphasis on certain words, and inconsistency in tone noted by SLCPD. Moreover, the email originated from a Google account, a departure from the "slc.gov" domain used by the actual police department.
Voice cloning technology or "deepfakes" represent a burgeoning threat in the digital age, a tool that adeptly crafts convincing lies. Scammers usually leverage such technology to make urgent requests for money, making it quite challenging for unsuspecting recipients to discern the ruse. SLCPD delineated the hallmarks of a voice-cloning scam, cautioning that pressure to act rapidly, requests for personal information, and directives to keep transactions secret are red flags not to be ignored.
