In a somber dispatch from Salt Lake City, local enforcement officials reported the arrest of a 17-year-old male following a domestic violence-related shooting incident. The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) announced that the young suspect, whose identity is withheld due to his juvenile status, was apprehended after allegedly shooting his 19-year-old roommate during an altercation.
As reported by SLCPD, late Thursday evening on October 17, in the Glendale neighborhood near 700 West North Temple Street, SLCPD swiftly responded to the 911 call made at approximately 11:52 p.m. The victim, whom paramedics quickly transported to the hospital, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. It appears a dispute erupted over something as seemingly trivial as a watch, only to then escalate to a level of violence that would split apart the notion of peaceful cohabitation.
Officers were able to locate and capture the suspect post-incident after a brief pursuit on foot. The suspect is currently facing a slew of charges, including aggravated assault, felony discharge of a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury, minor in possession of a firearm, and failing to stop at the command of law enforcement, according to the SLCPD's statement. The suspect has since been booked into the Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center.
These are preliminary charges and, as is customary, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Utah’s domestic violence laws extend to individuals living together, which covers roommates, with or without romantic ties. SLCPD has made clear that further details are subject to change as the investigation continues to evolve and more information becomes available. In the same vein, booking photos are not immediately available due to the restrictions under Utah Code 17-22-30, which generally prohibits the release of these images unless certain conditions are met.
