Last night, a fatal accident struck the Midway District of San Diego when a 40-year-old woman was hit by a car while she was crossing the street. According to the City of San Diego, the incident occurred at approximately 9:34 PM at the intersection of 3700 Camino Del Rio West and 3000 Kurtz Street.
The initial report by Watch Commander Woodell outlines that the pedestrian, identified only as P1, was traversing the crosswalk against a red, don't walk hand. Meanwhile, a dark-colored vehicle, described as P2, was traveling northbound in the #1 lane on Rosecrans Street – which morphs into Camino Del Rio West at the intersection – and had the green light. The vehicle struck P1 before fleeing the scene, leaving behind questions and a community in grief.
The San Diego Police Department's Traffic Investigations Unit (TIU) responded to the scene to examine the circumstances of the tragedy. Sadly, P1 sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision. As of now, whether driving under the influence was a factor in the crash remains unknown. The investigation is ongoing, and the search for the hit-and-run driver is in full swing.
