San Francisco International Airport Station is gearing up for a significant upgrade as BART begins the installation of Next Generation Fare Gates on October 11. This marks another step in the city-wide push to modernize transit infrastructure, building upon previous installations at stations such as 24th Street Mission and Civic Center. According to a Bay Area Rapid Transit news release, passengers can expect to see the old gates replaced with advanced systems designed to enhance the rider experience.
The installation process will be rolled out in stages, with work commencing on two sets of gates, one each on the upper and lower levels. To minimize disruption, a set of the existing gates will remain functional for riders on both levels. At the same time the upgrades occur, the signage will point them in the right direction, and additional staff will be stationed for assistance. Expect each set of new gates to take approximately two weeks to install, potentially leading to a more efficient and secure entry point once the project reaches completion.
The initiative is part of a larger effort to equip all BART stations with these fare gates by the end of 2025, an investment in the longevity and reliability of the public transit system.
