San Francisco's education system is entering a reconstruction phase under the new interim superintendent, Dr. Maria Su. With Dr. Matt Wayne's exit amidst controversy over school closures, the city looks forward to a period of stabilization and rebuilding of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). Dr. Su stepped up to the plate following Wayne's pressured resignation last Friday after facing backlash from parents and educators regarding his plan to close several schools. According to CBS News San Francisco, Dr. Su's immediate focus is to "rebuild relationships with our families, with our teachers, with our educators, with our staff. We need to bring back trust and optimism to our schools".
In a public showing of support, Mayor London Breed, alongside State Superintendent Tony Thurmond and other local leaders, endorsed Dr. Su's position as the interim head. Mayor Breed acknowledged the looming crisis, stating, "We have to do our part from an administrative perspective to ensure that we avoid state takeover and demonstrate to the State of California that we know what we're doing." However, as per CBS News San Francisco, she also mentioned the possible need to consider campus closures, emphasizing the need for a deliberate and informed process.
The district is grappling with financial challenges, which must be addressed by mid-December to prevent state intervention. Dr. Su, who has significant experience as the Executive Director of the Department of Children, Youth, and their Families, faces the intricate task of balancing the budget. Her lack of direct educational leadership has raised concerns, but as she told ABC7 News, "My job is to ensure that we deliver on a balanced budget so that San Francisco public schools can retain local control." This pragmatic focus is hoped to steer SFUSD from the brink of financial calamity.
Having been actively involved in city administration, Su's experience with the fiscal intricacies is expected to be advantageous. Her strategy includes working closely with stakeholders and adopting a clear communication approach. "I commit to all of our families, to our staff that I will be a clear communicator, that I will keep everyone engaged in what it is that we will do," Su conveyed during an interview with ABC7 News. Meanwhile, Mayor Breed took to social media to express her confidence in Dr. Su, noting her "proven track record of service to our city and our young people." As seen in her London Breed X post, the mayor reaffirmed her commitment to collaboratively tackling the tough decisions ahead.
Our families and children deserve great public schools, and I’m proud Dr. Maria Su will be stepping in to lead as Superintendent for SFUSD. Maria has a proven track record of service to our city and our young people.
