San Diego seniors struggling with low income and homelessness now have a reason to look forward with optimism as San Ysidro becomes the site of Ventana al Sur, offering 100 new affordable rental apartments designed specifically for their needs. The recent ribbon-cutting event celebrated its completion and forthcoming impact on the community. According to the San Diego Housing Commission, this milestone development can be credited to collaborations with the Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee on Anti-Poverty of San Diego County (MAAC) and Kingdom Development.

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria emphasized the project's importance in addressing the housing affordability and homelessness crisis. It includes 25 units specifically for seniors who have experienced homelessness.

Amid expectations that residents will move in next month, Nora Vargas, Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, praised Ventana al Sur's role in uplifting community members who deserve improved living conditions. Following SDHC's allocation of 25 housing vouchers to the development, on-site supportive services will further aid new residents. As stated by SDHC’s Executive Vice President Azucena Valladolid, the complex will offer affordable housing and a sense of security for seniors with either fixed or limited incomes.

Various levels of government came together to fund Ventana al Sur, with significant support from the City of San Diego and the State of California. The project received a $4.4 million loan from SDHC, $5 million from the "Bridge to Home" program, and around $50.4 million from state housing programs. This collaboration has created an important resource in the community.

Located in the San Ysidro Historic Village District and close to transportation, the development features Energy Star appliances and amenities like a community room and recreational spaces.
