
The Charlotte community is grappling with the latest update in the Steele Creek division homicide investigation as the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) announced they have charged a second 15-year-old juvenile in connection to the murder of 15-year-old Anthony Smith. According to an official press release, this development followed a tenacious effort by CMPD's Homicide Unit to track down the suspect involved in the tragic incident.
Authorities captured the juvenile on October 29, 2024, with the CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) successfully locating and the suspect, afterwards the suspect was then brought to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown to be questioned by detectives. In a statement released by the CMPD and published on their website, it was confirmed that the juvenile was later handed over to the custody of the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and charged with Murder following the interview.
The CMPD has reached out to the family of Anthony Smith to inform them of the arrest, recognizing the invaluable place of kinship and support in a time riddled with the grief of an irreplaceable loss. The identity of the arrested suspect has not been disclosed due to their status as a juvenile, a standard protocol aimed to protect underage individuals in the judicial process.
While the arrest marks a significant step forward in the case, the CMPD maintains that the investigation is still active and ongoing, signaling their commitment to uncovering the full scope of events that led to the untimely demise of the young Mr. Smith, further updates will be forthcoming from the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office as they gather more information. Detective Trietley, who has been assigned as the lead detective on the case, urges the public to come forward with any helpful information by calling the designated tip line or through Crime Stoppers’ anonymous contact avenues.
