In a recent case that underscores the ongoing battle against child exploitation, Michael Humphrey, a 43-year-old registered sex offender from Southeast D.C., has been sentenced to over 27 years in federal prison for the sexual abuse of a 5-year-old girl. U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves and officials from the FBI and MPD disclosed the sentencing after Humphrey uploaded videos to the internet capturing his heinous acts.
Convicted of third-degree sex offense back in March of 2020, Humphrey pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation on January 8, marking another disturbing chapter in his criminal history. U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden sentenced Humphrey to a 327-month prison term today and imposed an additional 15 years of supervised release, as he has been registered as a sex offender since May 2022.
According to a statement by the U.S. Department of Justice, this grim tale began when Google reported objectionable content uploaded to its servers to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in July 2023. The FBI Washington Field Office and the MPD identified the documents as belonging to Humphrey and, after obtaining a search warrant, found three videos of the abuse.
Humphrey's arrest on August 11, 2023, was only the beginning, as further investigation led to the disturbing discovery of thousands of images and hundreds of videos featuring child sexual abuse on his electronic devices. The case was spearheaded by the FBI's Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, charged with investigating and bringing federal charges against individuals who exploit children.
The prosecution was managed by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rachel Forman and Janani Iyengar, of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. The severe punishment reflects not just the gravity of Humphrey's crimes but also signals a clear message of the judicial system's intolerance for such exploitative acts against minors.
