A man wanted for multiple offenses across two states was apprehended by New Orleans police after a brief barricade situation in the Seabrook area. The standoff, which drew significant police presence, ended without further incident this morning.
Devain Washington, 24, found himself cornered within the confines of a structure on the 6000 block of Wales Street as officers attempted to execute a warrant for his arrest. According to WGNO, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) stated that they tried to serve Washington at approximately 7:52 a.m. before he barricaded himself into a home. A SWAT roll was declared shortly after Washington's initial refusal to cooperate.
The NOPD special operations team effectively resolved the standoff when Washington, who was wanted on aggravated assault charges in North Texas and a court capias for 2021 firearms charges in New Orleans, surrendered minutes later. This was at least the second police standoff in the same neighborhood within a week, highlighting a concerning recurrence of such confrontations in the region. The previous incident involved an eight-hour standoff at The Willows Apartments in the Seabrook area, as reported by NOLA.com.
In the aftermath of the standoff, Washington now faces a litany of legal challenges. According to authorities, he had initially come to their attention due to severe allegations stemming out from Texas, where aggravated assault charges loomed over his head. Moreover, his evasion of a court appearance in New Orleans for firearms charges had only compounded his situation, a reality that came to a head with his surrender to the NOPD, as noted by WDSU.
