Three men have been taken into custody in Memphis following a break-in at City Gear, where they allegedly stole over $20,000 worth of Nike and Jordan sneakers. According to Action News 5, the theft occurred on September 18 and the Memphis Police Department has since responded to the burglary at the store located at 4641 American Way.
Suspects Devontay Bonds, 27; Willie Powell, 23; and Haywood Jordan, 22, were observed loading boxes of shoes into two cars—a silver Kia Sorento and a black Ford Fusion. As they tried to make their getaway, they noticed law enforcement and attempted to quickly drive away from the scene, which resulted in Powell being unable to fully enter one of the vehicles and subsequently taken into arrest, reported WREG.
All three have been charged with burglary and theft according to a report by FOX13 Memphis, with Powell also facing a misdemeanor of evading arrest. Officers had arrived at the store after being alerted by the alarm system and discovered the individuals removing boxes of shoes at the rear of the business.
The report further explains that Bonds and Jordan were later arrested on October 1. This occurred after Jordan and Bonds happened to arrive at a house in Frayser, inquiring police about another arrest being made, at which point the police recognized Jordan from a previous Crime Stoppers tip. "The black Ford Fusion was used in the burglary and that it was driven by Bonds at the time," Jordan allegedly told police during questioning, as detailed by Action News 5. All three men are scheduled for a court appearance on Monday, where they are to commence dealing with the consequences of their alleged actions.
