An 11-year-old girl tragically drowned in a retention pond in Tooele County yesterday. Sgt. Scott Caldwell of the Tooele County Sheriff's Department confirmed that the girl was with a 7-year-old boy at the time of the incident. The young boy heroically ran about half a mile to seek aid, a desperate bid to change a narrative already in motion that ultimately did not yield the hoped-for outcome, as reported by KSL.
Upon learning of the accident, the boy returned with a neighbor and his father, who were able to pull the girl from the pond and begin administering CPR, KUTV detailed the efforts made to save her life, but despite the immediacy of their response and the continuation of CPR by first responders, the efforts were in vain. The pond, which is utilized for irrigation purposes, was reportedly fenced off to deter trespassers, a safety precaution highlighted by Sgt. Caldwell to underscore the potentially hidden dangers that such seemingly benign water bodies can present.
Tragically, the child's identity has not yet been released, and officials are likely to investigate further to unravel the precise series of events leading up to the calamity that unfolded near the Terra fire station at approximately 4:25 p.m.
