The University of Utah's football program faces a significant shift in its roster as starting quarterback Cam Rising is benched indefinitely due to a lower-leg injury sustained in a recent loss to Arizona State. Rising, notable for his key role in winning back-to-back Pac-12 championships and accumulating a career of 6,127 passing yards and 53 touchdowns, leaves a considerable void as he withdraws from the field.
In his stead, freshman Isaac Wilson steps forward to lead the Utes, confirmed by head coach Kyle Whittingham. Despite the unexpected shakeup, "We feel like the quarterback position is stable. We just don’t have Cam," Whittingham said, as per FOX13 Now. Wilson, a former Corner Canyon High star, will initiate his tenure as the starter, having already shown progress in the games he played this season.
The decision to promote Wilson is not left without a contingency plan. Whittingham has named Brandon Rose as the "solid No. 2," a decision made clear during a press conference. According to KSL, Whittingham stated, "There's no guesswork. He'll get all the reps, which equates to about 75% of the reps during the work week, and Brandon Rose will get the remaining 25%." He further clarified that Rose will step in "if anything happens to Isaac," but the team plans to proceed with Wilson as the prime quarterback.
Whittingham, addressing Rising's future and the possibility of an eighth season, remains open to discussion but acknowledges the hurdles. "Now that we’re in the situation that we’re in, that’s a possibility," he said, as reported by ABC4. Rising previously expressed doubt about extending his college football career, but recent events have put the option back on the table, pending extensive conversations with the compliance department and Rising's aspirations.
With the Utes' leadership at a pivotal crossroads, fans and team members alike anticipate Wilson's capabilities to fill the vacuum left by Rising. Wilson, being named the definitive starter, carries the weight of expectation and the challenge of maintaining Utah's competitive edge in the absence of a seasoned leader. For the near future, the team's success hinges on a freshman's shoulders, marking a new chapter for Ute football.
