A tragic fatal shooting in Florida City has claimed the life of a 9-year-old boy at the South Point Apartments complex, according to law enforcement officials. Florida City Police were called to the scene along West Lucy Street after a multiple gunshot detection alert last night, as reported by WSVN.
While officers were approaching, multiple 911 calls came in reporting the shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the child unresponsive with at least one gunshot wound. A witness, speaking in Spanish about the shooting, said, "Like 15 minutes ago, they were shooting here," and "It looked to be one of the kids from the apartments here, and the ambulance took him away. I don’t know if he was dead, but they were giving him CPR," according to a WSVN interview.
The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the distressing scene where lifesaving efforts were made before paramedics airlifted the boy to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. It was there that the child was pronounced dead, as mentioned by CBS News Miami.
In the wake of the shooting, the Miami-Dade Police Homicide Bureau has taken the lead in the ongoing investigation. Officials have shared that the child was among a group outside the South Point Apartments when shots were fired.
