The fashion landscape of Chicago's Magnificent Mile is set to quickly change come Saturday with the arrival of Aritzia, the luxury women's fashion retailer opening its doors at 555 N. Michigan Ave. This new flagship, which has taken over the space formerly housing The Gap, is noted to be Aritzia's most prominent footprint in the Chicago market, encompassing two floors of retail space.
According to a report by NBC Chicago, the design of the store aims "to enhance the existing integrity and beauty of the original building" with thoughtful architectural details such as textured brick, marble walls, and a custom canopy. Additionally, Aritzia has announced that special gifts will accompany qualifying purchases to celebrate the grand opening, available while supplies last.
Industry observers are closely watching the new addition to the retail strip, with hopes that it will spark further interest and investment in the Michigan Avenue district. It's been reported by the Chicago Tribune that the lease agreement by Aritzia was the most significant on the Magnificent Mile since 2015, a fact that is not lost on local businesses and market analysts.
John Vance, principal of Stone Real Estate, told the Chicago Tribune, "In the past six to nine months, brokers have started to say that the avenue is on the upswing." Aritzia's opening, alongside other recent additions such as H&M, has contributed to a notable surge in activity within the district. As the vacancy rates have begun to slightly decrease, from a historical high of about 30% last year down to approximately 26% now, the buzz is that this could be a turning point for the Magnificent Mile.
Kimberly Bares, CEO of the nonprofit Magnificent Mile Association, also shared her optimism, stating to the Chicago Tribune, "We've watched this building come to life, and we're thrilled to see it open." She expressed confidence that Aritzia's new store, especially with its distinctive marquee canopy, will become a significant draw for shoppers and help to reinvigorate the retail thoroughfare.
With over 125 locations operating an online business, Aritzia looks to be setting the pace for a renaissance of the Magnificent Mile, betting on its approach of offering "immersive, highly personalized shopping experiences," as they state, to resonate with Chicago's fashion-forward consumers and tourists alike.
