A Berwyn woman has accused controversial far-right influencer Nick Fuentes of pepper spraying her and physically assaulting her. Marla Rose, the 57-year-old writer and co-founder of a vegan lifestyle website, claimed the incident happened on Sunday after Fuentes' home address had been leaked online. According to a video that Rose captured on her phone, which she later posted on Facebook, she was sprayed and pushed down the front steps of Fuentes' residence, causing her to fall to the ground.
Echoing the tension that hangs in the air since the 2024 election results favoring President-elect Donald Trump, the allegation against Fuentes, known for his extremist views and denial of the Holocaust, places yet another spotlight on the divisions within American society. NBC Chicago reports that Fuentes, responding to the controversy, stated, "Don’t show up at somebody’s front door looking to cause problems," avoiding a detailed account of what transpired.
Rose, determined to confront Fuentes after she discovered his proximity to her home, told NBC Chicago that her intention was to question him about his inflammatory remarks on X, formerly known as Twitter. However, before she could even ring the front doorbell, the encounter quickly escalated, leading to the alleged assault.
Rose's actions have had repercussions; following the incident, which was captured on video by the victim, she claimed her own address has been leaked. After going public about the confrontation, Rose has faced what appears to be retributive measures, including swatting calls and unsolicited pizza orders sent to her vegan household, a harassment tactic she attributes to Fuentes' supporters. Despite the encounters, Rose indicated to the Sun-Times that she seeks legal counsel, yet she remains undecided on pressing charges. While not regretful, she does not advocate for others to follow in her footsteps, describing her action as a moment where she "got carried away."
Currently, there has been no formal statement from the Berwyn Police regarding the incident. However, Rose has confirmed speaking with the officers, who took her account and interacted briefly with Fuentes, in addition to recovering her broken phone from his home. Meanwhile, the community and netizens have expressed a wave of support for Rose, finding solidarity with her amidst a heated political climate and the grim shadow of hate rhetoric looming over the country.
